Clinton and Nukes

Wednesday, August 15th, 2007

“What in the world was Sen. Hillary Clinton thinking when she attacked Sen. Barack Obama for ruling out the use of nuclear weapons in going after Osama bin Laden? And why aren’t her supporters more concerned about yet another egregious example of Clinton’s consistent backing for the mindless militarism that is dragging this nation to ruin? So what that she is pro-choice and a woman if the price of proving her capacity to be commander in chief is that we end up with an American version of Margaret Thatcher?”

Geothermal Energy

Tuesday, June 19th, 2007

This is what happens when you get smart technology entrepreneurs elected to Congress.

With oil and natural gas prices soaring, the world seems to be searching for the next great source of energy. And while most people are looking to the heavens — tapping solar and wind resources — the answer may lie in the ground beneath our feet.

This subterranean source is known as geothermal energy and it’s already being used to heat homes. Now, some lawmakers are pushing for an increase in research and development into the technology.

U.S. Rep. Jerry McNerney, D-Pleasanton, is sponsoring a bill that would support the development of this source of power that some people believe can eventually supply electricity to 75 million homes. And if McNerney succeeds, one of the research and development centers created to nurture geothermal energy might be located in Northern California

FOX Debate: Kucinich, Gravel and Biden

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

Look, I know a lot of you admire Dennis Kucinich. I have a pocket of it myself. But when asked why he doesn’t get more respect and more of a following from his natural constituents, the reasoning he demonstrates in explaining why he will be on the FAUX Debate sort of explains it all.

Webb: Gunner

Wednesday, March 28th, 2007

Following the incident of his aide’s detention for trying to get a loaded pistol into the Senate, James Webb showed his grasp of history and human behavior:

“I believe that wherever you see laws that allow people to carry (weapons), generally the violence goes down.”

Webb

Hmmm, where would that be? Afghanistan? Iraq? The U.S? He reminds me of a friend of mind who regularly argues for allowing passengers to carry weapons while flying. “That’ll take care of any terrorists,” he growls. “And death and injury by “friendly fire?” I ask….

Boxer & Pelosi Greening D.C.

Saturday, March 3rd, 2007

Yes!

“The Speaker sent a letter Friday to the House chief administrative officer, directing him to report back to her by April 30 on how a “Green the Capitol” initiative could be implemented. She said she wants the House, which has about 10,000 employees scattered across several million square feet of office space, to institute “the most up-to-date industry and government standards for green building and green operating procedures.”

On the Senate side of the Capitol, Democrat Boxer has used her role as the new chairwoman of the Environment and Public Works Committee to initiate a pilot program to get senators to adopt more energy-efficient lighting in their offices.

…for example….

– Coat windows on the outside with ultraviolet-reducing film to reduce heat entering buildings and keep out harmful UV rays.

– Plant more trees nearby to shade the buildings and lower the inside temperature during the capital’s hot, humid summer.

– Place solar panels on the roofs.”

Small, but good.

In other news I heard today of a Japanese fitness center that had hooked up all it’s machines to a big building connected battery, enough to run the TVs, some of the lights and other electrical. If this were done in the Senate exercise room and every Senator given a quota…

Clinton Fires on Own

Thursday, February 22nd, 2007

The question we keep asking of Senator Clinton is not, “Do you regret your 2002 Bush enabling vote?” but “What are you doing now? How are you showing us, as a Senator and as a declared candidate, your ideas and your mettle?”

Sad to say the answer keeps rolling in bad.

The political gossip sheets have been party-gown sequined with news of the Clinton/Wolfson duo trying to tar Obama with David Geffen’s public put-down of Hillary and Bill.

Geffen was once a big fan of the Clinton’s — a fundraiser and visitor to the White House. After Clinton pardoned Marc Rich and not Leonard Peltier (as urged by Geffen) the friendship went sour. Last week Geffen held a $1.3 million fundraiser for Obama and at it gave Maureen Dowd some juicy opinion of the Clintons — which the Arch Cat put in her column on Sunday. H. Clinton went ballistic and sic’d Howard Wolfson on Obama.

The fight went public pretty quickly, and again, here and Margaret Carlson here.

Arianna jumps right in with unkind words for Wolfson.

James Carville and Donna Brazile strike out against Geffen while on the Situation Room.

Eric Alterman is tongue tied at the inanity of the thing but thinks Camp Clinton saw an opportunity to serve up some shit to reporters they could not resist.

Eric Boehlert at Media Matters lets Dowd have it with a few fact checks.

Somerby, at the Daily Howler, doesn’t like any of what he’s seeing, reminding us that Arianna not too long ago was calling Al Gore a serial liar and now she thinks he’s fabulous; today she’s lauding Geffen’s description of the Clinton’s a great liars…

And somewhere in the melee the dispicable Dick Morris weighs in, once a friend now a foe of everything Clinton.

Oh what a pie fight! If only it were only that. From what I read Clinton’s crew is too ugly, too fast. Take on the enemy please, not those standing in your own circle.

100 Hours Completes Early

Thursday, January 18th, 2007

Bravi tutti! Ancora! Ancora!

The Pelosi led Democrats did what they promised: 6 significant pieces of legislation passed by the House in under 100 hours.

The bills passed by the House as part of the 100-hour agenda would [if passed by the Senate and signed by the President]:

_Slap a “conservation fee” on oil and gas taken from deep waters of the Gulf of Mexico; scrap nearly $6 billion worth of oil industry tax breaks enacted by Congress in recent years; and seek to recoup royalties lost to the government because of an Interior Department error in leases issued in the late 1990s. Passed Thursday.

_Lower interest rates on federally subsidized student loans from 6.8 percent to 3.4 percent in stages over five years at a cost to taxpayers of $6 billion. Passed Wednesday.

_Make the government bargain directly with drug companies with the aim of reducing prices of prescriptions for Medicare beneficiaries. Passed Jan. 12.

_Expand government-financed embryonic stem cell research. Passed Jan. 11.

_Raise the federal minimum wage from $5.15 to $7.25 an hour over 26 months. Passed Jan. 10.

_Bolster terrorism-fighting efforts with more cargo inspections. Passed Jan. 9.

Democrats also won approval of internal House rule changes dealing with ethics, lobbying and budgeting. They were passed on Jan. 4-5.

Democrats Beat the Clock

Now, is this significant or is it just propaganda of the deed? That is, will any of these bills actually become law or were they cynically ginned up, knowing they would never make it through the digestive systems of Senate and Administration, but would make good scourges to whip the GOP with?

I don’t know. But in the choice of issues — broadly supported and non-controversial — points to a “twofer.” There was a resonable chance of passage, if not in the original form, in something proximate; AND, if they didn’t pass they would prove useful as scourges, particularly because of the mildness of the proposals.

Now comes the more interesting stuff.

The non-binding resolution against the Bush Soldier and Seaman Impressement Act will certainly get some action. [Here is a link to current counts of opposition, support, hiding in the restroom at MyDD. follow the link to see what action you can take.] The joint resolution HJR 14 offered the other day by Rep Walter Jones, declaring Bush must get Congressional approval for any moves on Iran, would be a fine thing to make the evening news.

Pelosi’s new panel to tackle energy and climate change is a good, solid statement as is her promise to have something about Energy Independence out by July 4th –more good theatre.

Pelosi Plans
and again.
