Sick Senator

Thursday, December 14th, 2006

I have to admit, when I first heard that South Dakota’s Senator Tim Johnson had a stroke or heart attack my first thought was polonioum 210. I reprimanded myself for paranoia and thinking evil of the opposition and concentrated on wishing him a speedy recovery. The news then arrived that it was not a stroke or heart attack and I allowed myself to relax a little, until I read last night brain surgery. That cost me a few hours of sleep, contemplating a scene from Romulo Gallegos’ Canaima in which a dead man is propped up in bed long enough to marry him to his lady friend who would otherwise be cast out in the streets by the family of the deceased.

This morning’s news that some tangled blood vessels in his brain had caused bleeding, and thus his disorientation, and had been successfully operated on was a relief in its concreteness, and a further worry because of what it implied. So I am left lopsided until we hear more. Meanwhile I’m sure the Republican Governor of South Dakota is going through his roledex for possible appointments, who would serve through January of 2009 at least, and have to stand for election in November 2008. You can be sure that no one being considered is of Senator Johnson’s party…

Newsday: Senator Johnson

Foley Report: Self Policing Fails (again)

Saturday, December 9th, 2006

Count me among those who think the non-action by the sub committee for Moaning and Sighing is scandalous all by itself.

Howard Berman,
otherwise a good Dem,[notably, except for his Invade Iraq vote in 2003] has soiled his good name with this report. [pdf]

Notwithstanding the concerns regarding the specific conduct of some individuals who learned of certain allegations regarding Representative Foley … the Invesitgative Subcommittee did not find any current House Members or employees violated the House Code of Official Conduct.

Even the NY Times Editorial writers get it: “the bipartisan committee produced a report yesterday that was a 91-page exercise in cowardice.

As Melanie Sloan of CREW says:

“This report is proof positive that the ethics committee is incapable of handling allegations of wrongdoing. To restore the public’s confidence in the congressional ethics process, the new Congress should immediately move to create an Office of Public Integrity to handle complaints against members of Congress.”

CREW Press Release

Aside from the Committee’s failure to find that any House Ethics rules were broken, two other things struck me. Those people directly reponsible for supervising the Pages, in the Residence Hall and at the School, seem not to have been in the loop enough to be the first point of contact for the offended Pages. Those who did complain went to their sponsoring Representative, which makes sense enough I suppose. But the Pages don’t work for their Sponsors; they are not in their offices doing their work. They work the House floor and for many people. Had I been in their shoes I might have thought to complain to someone I saw often, as a mentor or supervisor; a teacher, a Residence Hall supervisor. That didn’t happen.

The second thing that struck me is that although the letter from the Committee to all Representatives said it was “conducting an enquiry regarding any conduct of House Members, officers, staff related to information concerning improper conduct involving Members and current and former House Pages” the only matter of investigation in the report is about Foley. No Page called the 800 number and spoke of improper conduct of any other House Member? I hope it’s true that all the Ladies and Gentlemen are so well behaved but with 17 year olds of both sexes wanting attention and Representatives of all proclivities frankly, I’m surprised. Adult sexual interest in adolesents is certainly not, by sadly long and sadly documented evidence, a perculiarity of homosexuals.

Interestingly, Berman doesn’t make his e-mail public, but here is the DC address and phone. You might want to send him your comments,

Post Election Etiquette

Thursday, November 9th, 2006

“The sheer pleasure of getting lessons in etiquette from Karl Rove and the right-wing media passeth all understanding. Ever since 1994, the Republican Party has gone after Democrats with the frenzy of a foaming mad dog. There was the impeachment of Bill Clinton, not to mention the trashing of both Clinton and his wife—accused of everything from selling drugs to murder—all orchestrated by that paragon of manners, Tom DeLay.”

Sexual Supression

Friday, November 3rd, 2006

Damn! The Kerry gaffe that occupied the TV news for two days is completely vaporized. Now we have the real deal: SEX! And even better, HOMO sexual sex, and even better, by a fabulously famous Christian moralist who has warned his flock of millions, for years, about the evil evil homosexual agenda.

Ted Haggard, one of the 25 most influential evangelicals in the US, according to Time Magazine, a participant in weekly conference calls to the White House, a rip-roaring anti-gay preacher has been caught with his pants down. Literally. He’s been accused of having a three year, monthly, $200 a pop (so to speak) business arrangement with a male prostitute. Yesterday he resigned as President of the National Association of Evangelicals.

Today, the board of his New Life Church in Colorado Springs, has arranged for Haggard to step aside from his pastorship there with the comment that there “had been some admission of guilt.”

Fabulous. CNN

Update: YouTube clip of Good Morning America with Haggard’s voice (claimed) asking for meth.

[It's interesting to watch Haggard in the TV clips close his eyes as he says "I've been faithful to my wife."]

Haggard had been a big promoter of Colorado’s up-coming No Gay Marriage vote to ammend the Colorado consitution. His trystee, Mike Jones, had not known who his John was — knowing him only as “Art” –until Haggard’s face began gracing TV ads in favor of the ammendment. Jones, less hypocritcal than Haggard, wrestled with his conscience and his conscience won: Jones went public.

I can see why Haggard wants to have his cake and eat it too (so to speak.) Banning gay marriage, demonizing gays, makes his own transgressive desires even more dangerous and therefore more erotic. I’m not sure I want to work out all the psycho-sexual implications here, or hear any more details from Mr. Jones, but power and submission along with the hidden and forbidden are bound to be part of the eternal mystery of sex being played out in one more tawdry motel room…

Ney – Gone

Friday, October 13th, 2006

Representative Bob Ney, Ohio, who long and vehemently denied any ill-doing — no bribe taking, no relation to Abramoff, etc — is pleading guilty today, and probably resigning his Congressional seat.

In a calm and clear voice, Mr. Ney admitted before Judge Ellen S. Huvelle in Federal District Court that he had indeed engaged in a wide-ranging criminal conspiracy and made false statements about gifts he accepted while representing the people of Ohio’s 18th District.

Bye

I don’t suppose we’ll see any analysis of, or read any apologies for, all the denials, the stand-by-our-man statements, finger wagging at Democrats or any other statements or gestures making up the whole sordid stew of malfeasance, corruption or wrong headedness. What we will see are statements like “We have to leave the past behind us,” “I’m focused on the future,” etc etc. Because wandering through the haze of denial is so much more comfortable that really, really, looking at what has been and is still going on in the country and in the congress.

Oh hoh! So he’s not leaving Congress until his term is over! What the Eff?

Update: Muckraker says “a few weeks” before resignation. “A few constituent items to tie up.” Hmmm…or files to destroy?

Hastert To Resign?

Thursday, October 5th, 2006

Update: Hastert, I did nothing wrong and I did Nothing Wrong.

The early rumors were that Hastert had prevailed on Louis Freeh, ex FBI Chief, to head an investigation. Apparently not. Not clear yet who is to do this investigation.

The House Ethics Committee has also decided to do an investigation, having sent out about 4 dozen subpoenas. Howard Berman (D-CA) will be on the sub-committe. Interesting.

CNN is reporting at 9:30a.m. that Hastert will have a news conference within the hour. The bloggies are abuzz with whether it will be an outright resignation, or a promised one.

Gay Trouble Brewing

Thursday, October 5th, 2006

The great danger from the moment the Foley Phallic Phantasies story broke was that it would be hijacked by the mob and used for their own purposes. We see this beginning to happen with claims that homosexuals are far more likely to prey on the young than heterosexuals (who often use guns, by the way) and now “The List.” David Corn, among others, has a copy of this list of purportedly gay Republican staffers, which may be used, as is common in Authoritarian Panics, to blame all troubles on a malific parasite hidden among them, to be exterminated at all costs.

there is a Republican strategy to find scapegoats–other than House Speaker Denny Hastert, of course–and the two leading candidates seem to be Democrats (for somehow making this scandal a scandal) and gay Republicans (for presumably protecting the page-pursuing Mark Foley). From what I can tell, some of these gay GOPers are fighting back. I cannot say too much about this without disclosing more than I should about certain individuals. But there does seem to be a conflict brewing within Republican circles between straight cons and gay GOPers. I’m wondering how nasty this will become and if it will become public. Should that occur, things could get rather ugly.
